Students who are unable to attend class must request excused absence ("leave") from the instructor in advance.

  • The Univeristy's Student Excused Absence ("Leave") Policy : National Tsing Hua University Regulations for Student Leave of Absence
  • Advance Leave Request for Excused Absences: Students who are unable to attend class must request leave from the instructor in advance, except for psychological leave, menstrual leave, and maternity leave.
  • Absences during Midterms and Final Exams due to Extenuating Circumstances: Leave requests for midterm and final exams are not permitted, except in cases of official duties, illness, childbirth, bereavement, force majeure, or other extenuating circumstances. Such requests must be supported by appropriate documentation and approved by the instructor. Exceptions may be granted at the instructor's discretion.
  • Late Application for Extenuating Circumstances: A late application may be submitted within 7 days of the absence, only in cases of extenuating circumstances, and must be accompanied by the necessary documentation.

  2. Mandarin Course Requirements for NTHU International Students (Chinese Language Center): 4 credits (For MA international students), 8 credits (For PhD international students)
  3. Online Academic Research Ethics Education Course (Division of Registration)
  4. Complete Proposal, Thesis & Oral Defense (see Guidelines below)
  1. Complete TSE required coursework: 24 credits
    • Curriculum (Applied to the Class of 2024, who matriculated in the academic year of 2022) (Applied to the Class of 2023, who matriculated in the academic year of 2021)

Applying for Oral Defense

Oral Defense

Submitting Thesis and Completing Leaving School Procedure

1. Deadline: Oct. 31 2024 (Class of 2025)

2. Deadline: July 31 (Class of 2026 and on)

1. Apply at 7 working days before the proposal is held.

2. The proposal date should be at least 2 months before the oral exam date.

*Deadline of thesis proposal date: May 31 of the year.

1. Apply at least three weeks before the oral exam is held

Ⅳ. Applying for Oral Defense

  1. The preliminary application for the Master’s degree Examination
    1. Official transcript
    2. Thesis draft
    3. Similarity report of the thesis draft (Plagiarism Check with Turnitin)
    4. Academic Ethics Certification
  2. Apply the oral defense in the NTHU Academic Information System for approval by the Division of Registration: 
    1. Reserve a room with the program office
    2. Log into the Academic Information System.
    3. Click "The Graduate Degree Oral Defense" (研究生學位考試)
    4. Click "Online Application" (登錄作業)
    5. Fill in the application and submit
  3. Preparing the Defense:
    1. Collect receipts of review fees and transportation reimbursement from the program office (if applicable)
    2. Print out required documents from the Academic Information System
  4. Graduate Degree Exam Process Flow Chart – Master's Students (Division of Registration)
  5. Plagiarism Check with Turnitin
    1. Use the Plagiarism check tool: Turnitin.
    2. Apply Turnitin account (Division of Learning Technology)

Ⅴ. Oral Defense

  1.  Provide the following documents to the thesis committee members
      1. National Tsing Hua University Master Thesis Oral Defense Form
      2. National Tsing Hua University Master Thesis Advisor Approval Form
      3. Graduate Student Oral Defense Grade (3 copies)
      4. Committee Member Review Fee Receipt 
  1. Oral Defense Procedure

After the defense, documents are to be submitted by the student:

      1. National Tsing Hua University Thesis/Dissertation Affidavit
      2. National Tsing Hua University Master Thesis Oral Defense Form
      3. Signed receipts of review fees and transportation reimbursement (if applicable)
      4. Application for Embargo of the Thesis/Dissertation (if applicable) 

Documents to be submitted by the advisor:

      1. National Tsing Hua University Master Thesis Advisor Approval Form
      2. Graduate Student Oral Defense Grade (3 copies)

Ⅵ. Submitting Thesis and Completing Leaving School Procedure

  1. The leaving school procedure should be completed before the last working day of the next Fall semester. Otherwise the oral defense result will become invalid.
  2. Submit the thesis to the NTHU Academic Information System for approval by the NTHU library.
  3. Once approved, complete the NTHU Library checklist before you submit your Printed Thesis or Dissertation 
  4. Print out 3 hard copies of the thesis. Submit 2 copies to the program office (the program office will deliver 1 copy to the Division of Registration) and 1 to the NTHU Library. 
  5. Complete all the leaving school procedures in the NTHU Academic Information System.
  6. Bring your student ID card to the Division of Registration and collect the diploma.
