Course Description:
In this course, we study the economic development model of China since 1978 in comparison to the previous experience of Germany, USA, Japan and East Asian countries of Korea and Taiwan. As a late-comer in industrialization, China is unique in its size of population, political system, and initial status as a plan economy. Economic growth of China was accompanied by reforms of institutions that were initially put in place for economic planning. In spite of daunting challenges of reforms, China has recorded one of the most rapid and dramatic economic transformations in the human history. However, what has accounted for such a spectacular performance is debated. The Chinese model exhibits many features which resemble technological catch-up processes of Germany, USA , and Japan before WWII where domestic market drives growth. It also exhibits features of the Post-War East Asian model of Taiwan and Korea where export expansion drives growth.
