Healthcare coverage is of utmost importance. International students should prioritize this matter immediately after completing their university registration.

Three types of insurance may affect you:

International Group Insurance - Applicable for the first semester of new students.

National Health insurance – This takes effect six months after obtaining an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC).

Student Insurance – Available for registered students of National Tsing Hua University.

Issues to consider

New students should enter Taiwan according to the school registration date and the requirements set by the university. If students enter after the registration date, it can result in them facing an uninsured period of 1-2 months between the two insurance policies. Regardless of their current health conditions, if students have any concerns about the uninsured period occurring between the group insurance and the NHI, they should consider purchasing additional insurance from their home country before leaving.

Recommendations if living outside the dorms (based on student experience):

  • 591.com. This website is the go-to for finding places to rent in Taiwan.
  • Two facebook housing groups to look at are 新竹租屋 and 新竹租屋便利站 . Be aware that Hsinchu is very small and expensive, so don’t be afraid to look further afield.
  • Taiwan Housing is a bilingual real estate platform dedicated to simplifying the rental search for international residents in Taiwan. By offering bilingual listings, map-based searches, and instant currency and unit conversion tools, the platform effectively bridges language and information gaps.

Taiwan Housing partners with local agents and landlords equipped with foreign language skills, fostering a transparent and foreigner-friendly environment. Their personalized matching service connects users with verified agents to ensure smooth, efficient communication. Beyond property search, the platform provides practical rental guides and collaborates with professional relocation services, supporting international talent throughout their journey—from finding a home to settling in comfortably. If you end up living in the center of the city, NTHU will still only be around 15-20 minutes drive away. From Big City, which we can consider downtown, it’s about a 30-40 minute bus ride away.

There are three major dining halls on campus: 小吃部 XiaoChiBu (Food Court), 水木生活中心 ShuiMu, and 風雲樓 FengYunLou. Eating at one of these dining halls might be cheaper than eating out. Students, faculty, and community members eat here. All restaurants in these have a self-service return tray/utensils area. They are by the lake and across from the second stop (General Building II) of the NTHU campus shuttle.

Where to Eat Around TSE:

The iNTHU (i清華·) App was developed to provide information related to NTHU campus life for faculty, staff, and students. It also features a built-in emergency positioning service. When individuals encounter dangerous situations on or off campus and require urgent assistance, the system can send their location to the NTHU Security Center through the app (SOS), immediately alerting relevant units for rescue. The app also offers many more useful features such as campus bus timetables, campus news, career development information, and NTHU dorm/doorkeeper (qr code).

Sign in using your NTHU ID. To change your profile icon and language settings, click on “Info” in the center at the bottom of the app interface.
