This summer TSE student Chun-Yuan Chiu had the opportunity to join the "Innovation Ecosystems for Grand Challenges" (IEGC) program held by University College London (UCL), let's see what they are doing!
Words from Chun-Yuan Chiu:
"I had the opportunity to participate in the "Innovation Ecosystems for Grand Challenges" (IEGC), a summer school program hosted by University College London (UCL) in the UK from late June to July 2024. This enriching experience consisted of two key components: guest lectures on critical global issues and a student group project that focused on developing a business plan to address a pressing grand
challenge. The guest lectures were diverse and thought-provoking, covering topics such as Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks, AI regulation, and sustainability. One of the most significant takeaways for me was a deeper understanding of sustainability. Prior to the program, I believed sustainability was primarily about being eco-friendly and that it was an expensive endeavor for
businesses to adopt. However, through these lectures, I learned that sustainability is not only about protecting the environment but also about driving cost efficiencies for companies. It became clear that adopting sustainable practices can help businesses save money in the long run by reducing waste and improving resource management. The group project was another highlight of the program. My team decided to address the challenge of motivating content creators to produce high-quality online courses by building an online education platform. Throughout this process, we employed strategic frameworks such as PEST analysis to better understand the market environment and refine our business model. This hands-on experience helped me develop practical skills in analyzing real-world markets, and I gained confidence in applying theoretical concepts to tangible business problems. After completing the two-week program, I left with a much clearer perspective on how to assess and respond to global challenges. The experience not only broadened my understanding of critical global issues but also equipped me with valuable skills in market analysis and business strategy development. This summer school was an eye-opening journey, providing me with the tools to better navigate the complexities of modern challenges."
