Course Description:
This course is devoted to selected topics development economics from dynamic and global perspectives. It begins by highlighting important empirical facts concerning growth and development in various countries at different development stages. Fundamental growth and development theory are then delivered, to provide a framework to explain empirical facts and to evaluate the consequences of commonly adopted development policies systematically. Topics include:
(i) technological changes and industrial transformation, (ii) skills, health and labor market development
(iii) demographic transition
(iv) inequality
(v) institutions and poverty problems
(vi) political economy and global development.
Cross-country empirical evidence and country case studies will be provided throughout the lectures. The main purpose of this course is to help you strengthen the fundamentals toward conducting research in these areas.
