Abstract:

There is no doubt that energy is one of the most vital pillars of contemporary civilization and economies. The global energy architecture is the result of decades of investment in scientific breakthroughs, new technologies, human resources, infrastructure, and energy policy.

Energy Transition Index (ETI) was launched by the World Economic Forum in 2012 with a goal of being a complete, global indicator measuring the performance of energy systems at the national level.

A key component of the Index is an analytical framework that evaluates the transition to a sustainable, secure, and accessible energy system and institutions that facilitate this transformation.

The ETI is calculated using 38 indicators gathered from various international institutions such as the World Bank, IMF, WTO, IRENA, and etc. Experts from the World Economic Forum use the statistics above to analyze how well more than 100 countries are progressing towards green energy.

However, Taiwan's ETI score is not projected in the reports. This makes it difficult to measure its development compared to neighboring states, or the world at large, other than by measuring renewable energy generation capacity.

This study's main contribution is to calculate Taiwan's (Republic of China) ETI score from 2017 to 2021 and compare its progress with those of its regional neighbors Japan and South Korea.
